When you are pregnant, it is important to keep a schedule of regular visits with your obstetrician to help ensure that your baby is born happy and healthy. Pregnancy comes with a wide range of questions and concerns, and your doctor will be the best resource to get the answers you need. Additionally, your doctor will offer the ultrasound imaging and lab testing needed to observe the health of your baby through all the stages of your pregnancy. Below is a brief overview of the different aspects of prenatal care you can expect from an obstetrician.
- Initial imaging and due date calculation: Shortly after your first visit to your doctor you will receive your first ultrasound, lab tests, cervical culture and a pap smear. These tests will be used to examine your health, evaluate your pregnancy, and determine when your baby is due.
- Pregnancy and childbirth education: As your pregnancy progresses, you will probably start to have all kinds of questions about your health and the development of your baby. To address these concerns, your second visit will be largely centered on a discussion with your doctor to educate you about some pregnancy basics. You will learn how to minimize nausea and vomiting, the appropriate time to travel, when to call the doctor and more useful information. You will also talk about pregnancy nutrition so that you can be sure to eat the right foods to nourish your baby and your body. Routine prenatal blood tests may be drawn at this visit and you will also be offered to schedule an appointment to meet with our nutritionist.
- Continued four-week visits: After your first few visits, you will begin a regular schedule of appointments that are set four weeks apart. These visits might consist of further screening and blood testing to ensure that the pregnancy remains healthy. About seven months into your pregnancy, your visits to the doctor will begin to take place every two weeks.
