Symptoms and Treatment of Uterine or Ovarian Cysts

Last updated 3 months ago

Cysts are fluid-filled sacs that often form during a woman’s menstrual cycle. Ovarian cysts form in a woman’s ovaries, while uterine cysts form in the uterus. Most cysts will dissolve and often goes away within a few months.

Symptoms

Although most women will not have any symptoms of a cyst, some women experience some of these symptoms:

  • Pressure swelling or pain in the abdomen or pelvic area.
  • Difficulty passing urine
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Breast tenderness
  • Dull ache in lower back and thighs

If you experience the following symptoms, seek immediate medical care:

  • Pain accompanied by fever and vomiting
  • Faintness, dizziness, or weakness
  • Sudden and severe abdominal pain
  • Rapid breathing

Treatment

Your gynecologist may prescribe oral contraceptives to prevent cyst formation and pain relievers to reduce pelvic and abdominal pain.

If cysts cause you pain and persist for several menstrual cycles, your OGBYN or gynecologist may recommend surgery to remove the cyst. There are two types of surgery used to remove ovarian and uterine cysts:

1.      Most frequently, your gynecologist will recommend laparoscopic surgery for cysts that are small and appear to be benign. During laparoscopic surgery, your doctor will make a small incision to insert a small scope to identify and remove the cyst.

2.      If a cyst is large or appears to be cancerous, your gynecologist will perform a laparotomy, making an incision through the abdominal wall in order to remove the cyst.
